Rick Bakas is the Director of Social Media Marketing at St. Supéry Winery in Napa Valley. In this role, Rick is responsible for managing St. Supéry’s brands using social media.

Rick spent eight years at NIKE creating and managing brands. He was the first person to be hired at NIKE by submitting an interactive resume and portfolio on a floppy disk. He was a key member of the branding teams responsible for the NFL’s Denver Broncos and New York Giants, as well as the University of Oregon Ducks where he was the lead designer on the rebranding team.

In 2008, Rick introduced the concept of "social branding" where personal brands and corporate brands would share a level playing field in social media, at the same time utilizing some of the same strategies.

Steve Bowden has been developing strategies, systems and analytical tools to predict and influence consumer behavior for more nearly 20 years.

Steve began his wine industry career in 2000 leading database marketing efforts for Robert Mondavi and eventually took on responsibility for all Customer Relationship Marketing (CRM) activities for the corporation’s 10+ brands.  Key achievements included developing comprehensive direct-branding and direct-selling strategies, engineering a sophisticated data mart for analysis, developing models to predict product preferences & customer attrition, increasing wine club & e-commerce revenue, increasing opt-in email addresses for loyalty programs, managing all consumer-direct communication via email, direct mail and web, and conducting qualitative and quantitative consumer research.

In 2005, Steve moved to The Hess Collection winery where he implemented a data-based marketing strategy to significantly increase share of wallet and deepen consumer commitment to the brand.

In 2006, Steve launched Old Vine Marketing to help wineries build stronger relationships with their customers.  Key services include marketing strategy development, data mining, segmentation, systems selection and implementation and campaign management.

Laina Brown is the President of Black Stallion Winery. One of Napa Valley’s newest wineries, Black Stallion Winery sells all of its wine directly from the winery and through the website. Laina began working with Black Stallion Winery as a business consultant in 2006 to develop the business model and initial marketing plan. She took over as President just prior to the launch of the winery in 2007.

Prior to joining Black Stallion Winery Laina worked as a business consultant working with several wineries throughout the Napa Valley to enhance brand identity and develop direct sales markets through marketing and business plans, web development, and tasting room design.

Laina Brown started her career in the wine industry as Marketing Director for Intervine, Inc., a Napa-based wine importer and distributor specializing in the airline and cruise line industries. She went on to join Domaine Carneros by Taittinger as the Wine Club Director and Marketing Director Winery Programs before taking on the role of Hospitality Director. Dennis Cakebread graduated from UC Berkeley in 1975, attended graduate school at what is now UCEB and started his working career doing bank and savings and loan audits. After receiving his CPA license he left public accounting and went to work for one of his clients in the savings and loan industry as a controller. He ended his banking career as an EVP/CFO before starting work at his family winery in January 1987.

Now a co-owner and responsible as SVP Sales and Marketing for Cakebread Cellars he has been active in industry associations and issues for many years. He is a past president and past board member for the Napa Valley Vintners, a past president and past board member for the Wine Service Coop, past co-chair of Auction Napa Valley, and a past board member for Family Winemakers of California. He is currently a board member of Wine Institute, FreetheGrapes and the Treasurer and board member of the Coalition for Free Trade. He is one of the founders of the Direct to Consumer Symposium in California which was first held on May 1, 2008. He has two children and says the two years spent as president of the St Helena Little League was one of his most challenging and rewarding experiences.

Clay Gregory has more than 25 years of marketing and management experience in multiple industries, building consensus and developing outstanding programs with a wide variety of partners across many fields. He is currently the President and CEO of the Napa Valley Destination Council, whose mission is to protect and enhance The Napa Valley's position as North America’s legendary wine, food and wellness capital.

Prior to his current role, Gregory served as President of Jackson Family Wines, a collection consisting of more than a dozen independently operated wineries and brands in prestigious California and international winegrowing regions in St. Emilion, Chianti, Australia and Chile.
Gregory was responsible for all marketing, winemaking, vineyard and general management of the various wineries within Jackson Family Wines.

In 2003, Gregory was President of the Napa Valley Vintners and the Napa Valley Wine Auction. He served previously as President of the Oakville Winegrowers. He is the current President of the Board of Directors of Napa Humane and serves on the Board of Directors of the Robert Mondavi Institute for Wine and Food Science at UC Davis.

Gregory’s role with the NVV was preceded by his position of Vice President and General Manager of Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley, California. Clay’s diverse responsibilities over his fourteen year tenure at RMW included managing all winemaking, vineyard, marketing and visitor programs operations. In addition to his managerial duties, he oversaw the strategic direction of the winery, including the To Kalon Project, the first significant renovation and enhancement to the Winery since its construction in 1966. 

Prior to his stint at Robert Mondavi, Gregory spent more than six years at Motorola, Inc., in Cupertino, California as a Marketing Manager for the company’s Computer Systems division.

Steve Gross is Director of State Relations at Wine Institute, where he has been employed since 1986. Steve’s duties entail overseeing the activities of Wine Institute’s six State Relations Regional Counsels as they address state legislation affecting the wine industry, as well as coordinating Wine Institute’s legislative and regulatory activities with staff, contract lobbyists and member wineries.

Steve regularly participates in many national programs dealing with issues facing the wine industry, both on the legislative and regulatory levels. Michael Mann was employed by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for over two decades. He retired as the District Administrator in charge of the Department's Santa Rosa Office. In that capicty, Michael was responsible for five Northern California Counties, which included Napa, Sonoma, Lake, Marin, and Mendocino Counties. This geographical area accounts for over 50% of the state's wine manufacturing and wholesaling industry. In years past, Michael was also the District Administrator in charge of the Department's San Francisco Office. He was then responsible for both San Francisco and San Mateo Counties, dealing mainly with the retail industry.

Michal has worked in every sworn field capacity with the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. He has worked closely with local and state law enforcement and community organizations. He has participiated in the legislative process on numerous occasions addressing issues with the ever changing alcoholic beverage industry. Michal has assisted with many of the large acquisitions and mergers in the manufacturing, wholesale and retail industries. Vanessa Robledo, fourth generation grape grower in Napa & Sonoma, has accomplished quite a bit in her young life. She picked grapes in the field as a child, went on to become President of her family’s winery, launched her own consulting company, and has recently joined Black Coyote Chateau in Napa as President and Partner.
Under her stewardship, Robledo Family Winery grew from a tiny 100 case producer in 1997 to a very healthy and thriving business doing 20,000 cases a year in 2007. As the subject of dozens of feature stories and loads of radio and television appearances on everything from Univision to the Food Network Vanessa is an important voice in the wine industry. She has become the face of a new generation of Hispanics who are well educated, hard working and eager to spread the gospel about food and wine to anyone who will listen.

In October of 2008 Vanessa joined Black Coyote Chateau which produces 800 cases of Cabernet grown in one of Napa’s 15 prestigious appellations, Atlas Peak. Today she continues her family legacy in the wine industry getting involved in all aspects of the winery; farming, wine production management, local and national sales, marketing, public relations, legal compliance, and wine club development and management.

Others have recognized the work being done by Vanessa Robledo. The Sonoma County Board of Supervisors honored her as the first district recipient of the Woman of Color Humanitarian Award in 2005. In 2006 she was awarded the Latino Business Leadership Award given to the most influential Hispanic leaders in the Bay Area. Jeff Stevenson is the co-founder, President and CEO of Provino Premium Wines, a wine sales and services company.  Provino is one of the leading companies in Direct to Consumer telesales marketing, and bolsters a portfolio of some of the most respected brands in the wine business as its partners and customers.  Founded in 2007, Provino employs over 20 people and is located in Santa Rosa, CA.

Jeff is also a partner and winemaker for Herrerias Cellars, a small, artisan winery producing wines since 1987 from locally grown and produced Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet, Syrah, Malbec and Tempernillo. Jeff participated as a founding member of the Petaluma Gap, a newly created appellation in Sonoma County that recognizes the outstanding quality of Pinot Noir and other varietals produced in this region.

Jeff also has over 25 years of business experience in sales, venture capital, business development and software/information technology. In addition to founding Provino, he is a partner/founder of North Bay Adobe Associates LLC, a real estate development company, and Venture Crossing LLC, a Venture Capital consulting and investment business. Previously a General Partner with Alcatel Ventures LLP, the venture arm of French telecom company Alcatel AG, Jeff headed up all technology investment activity for the Silicon Valley office.  He is no stranger to startup companies; he joined both NetManage and Netscape Communications when the companies were both initially founded and were startups in every sense of the word.  He then participated in the IPO's of each which were both the most successful IPOs in history at that time.

Jeff plays in several bands in Sonoma County, including the Seven Zins (rock/funk) and L'Fiasco (New Orleans funk). He is the founder/co-president of the Porsche Racing Club and races his car whenever time permits.

A Napa Valley native, Steve Tamburelli has spent his entire life working in and around the wine industry, developing a passion for wine and a comprehensive knowledge of sales and marketing.

As a high school student, Steve began working for his family’s wine distribution business during summers and school holidays, a practice he continued throughout university. After earning a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Santa Clara, Steve joined the family business fulltime, where he broadened his understanding of the distributor’s perspective. Within three years Steve assumed the position of General Manager. In 1991, he purchased the business from his family. Over the next eight years, Steve consistently strengthened the business, increasing sales by 50 percent and acquiring a competing company.

After many prosperous years as a distributor, Steve found himself drawn to the winery side of the industry. In 1998, Steve sold his business and soon took a position as the Chief Operating Officer for Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, learning the intricacies of winery and vineyard business operations. In 2002, Steve joined Chappellet as Director of Finance, Sales & Marketing. Working alongside Cyril Chappellet, Steve leads the winery’s worldwide distribution and sales and marketing programs. During his tenure, Steve has greatly contributed to the winery’s success, building brand awareness, increasing sales, and expanding worldwide distribution networks for Chappellet’s highly allocated wines.

Kristen Techel is an attorney specializing exclusively in the area of alcoholic beverage law at the law firm Hinman & Carmichael LLP in San Francisco.

Kristen handles all aspects of alcohol law, with a particular focus on marketing, promotions, administrative hearings and trade practice issues. Representative clients include retailers such as Trader Joe’s and 7-Eleven as well as suppliers such as Kendall-Jackson.

 A native of Napa, Kristen grew up working the bottling line at a small winery in Coombsville.  She holds a J.D. from Boalt Hall at UC Berkeley and a B.A. from UCLA.

Clark Z. Terry’s wine industry career began in the fall of 2006 when he worked as a cellar intern at Monticello Vineyards and Trefethen Family Vineyards. While at Trefethen, he authored a blog chronicling the day to day workings of a cellar rat.

Soon after finishing his internship at Trefethen, he started work at the retail store of Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, first handling shipping and stocking duties and then transferring to a full-time sales position.

Clark started and now manages the web presence of KLWM, authoring their blog, managing email marketing campaigns, administering social media accounts, and overseeing the development of a new website.

Clark grew up in Napa. He graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2005 with a BA in Music.

Paul's professional work life before Missing Link Networks, Inc. spans 10 years ranging from professional programming, major account sales and service at MCI Telecommunications, and design of large data and video conferencing networks for state government and Fortune 1000 corporations.

Paul enjoys cycling, lifting weights, flying, and motorcycling.  He lives in Calistoga, CA with his wife and two children.

In a two-decade career, Doug Wilder emerged as one of the most influential experts in the luxury domestic wine retail market embracing the latest innovations at every fork in the road.

After becoming one of the first retailers in America to write reviews and ratings on wines he offered to clients, he went on to work with two of the leading retailers first as Founding Director of Wine E-Commerce at St. Helena’s Dean & Deluca before joining Vinfolio, Inc. as their Founding Director of California Acquisitions and Sales creating the domestic wine program and writing over 200 issues featuring dozens of reviews and ratings on emerging wines. Additionally, he wrote the company’s first blog, ultimately influencing over 20000 members who subscribed to his content.

In 2008, he independently launched dougwilder-the purely domestic wine blog, (ranked #1 on Google for search ‘domestic wine review’) exclusively featuring early stage reviews on emerging wines from California, Oregon and Washington. Matt Wood

Matt Wood was born in England in 1965. After gaining a Bachelor of Laws degree from Leeds University, he joined Bass PLC as a management trainee. Following several assignments in retail operations and marketing he left to form his own small business consultancy service.

In 1994, Matt immigrated to California with his wife Elke and looked for opportunities within the wine industry. In 1997, he settled at Franciscan Estates starting as a tasting room assistant before moving into a management role overseeing the direct to consumer business. As the business transitioned to ownership by Constellation, the importance of consumer direct, and Matt’s role grew substantially.  After ten years with Icon Estates where Matt managed ten tasting rooms, multiple wine clubs and internet sites, he transitioned to a new role with 1-800 Flowers in July of 2008.

Matt’s new role is focused on developing the wine category for the 1-800 Flowers group of companies, including 1-800 Flowers, Plow and Hearth, Ambrosia and many others. In addition he is spearheading a new co-operative marketing model with wineries to leverage the 1-800 Flowers customer database.
